I am a lifelong creator. I can’t imagine my life without knitting needles, embroidery floss, pen and paper. I just can’t imagine it! handwork gifts me so much pleasure and calm and pure joy.

I can only sign under to this!! I got asked in an interview earlier today much about why I create and I could only answer: because it’s life and if I don’t it’s like I’m not living

Well said…totally feel this as well! When i don’t have time to β€œmake” i find that I am not myself ~ i feel a little bit off!

I like this article. It made me think. I have a bit of a problem with the word art. It seems too big a word. Or that is my feeling about the word art. I take pictures with my little camera. I crochet. For me it's in the making. Capturing those fleeting moments. Feeling the yarn go through my hands and seeing the fabric grow. That's not what art means to me. I don't know. Maybe I have to think about this a bit more.

Thank you for sharing your reflections here!

It’s very fascinating how you separate art from making, where I see art big like you but more so as an umbrella under which all making becomes art on its own. Because who is to judge what is art and not? Who is to judge that what you do isn’t art - to some extent it’s only yourself who decide that isn’t it? A photographer may sell his images as prints which become photo art on the wall. A crochet artist may make exhibits which becomes a representation of fibre arts (which keeps growing in the art scene btw).

I see photography, crocheting as the art-mediums through which you may express yourself artfully.

I’m not in love with the end result of making an art piece - me too it’s about the process and feeling it in the hands, and that’s art to me πŸ₯°

I understand what you mean, but where do you put the word craft then? I don't know. Maybe it's a continuum and every person has an individual sense of where the making becomes craft and goes over to art. I'm still going to think about it for a bit. Like: What is an art-medium? Can you only make art with an art-medium? Isn't that limiting art and how it is created?

Yes it’s fascinating to reflect on indeed! I don’t see art-medium as a limiting concept at all because there are infinite mediums if you will so there’s really no limit as to how to make art in that sense.

As for craft vs art distinction I recognize this a lot in the embroidery niche and I think again it comes down to your own definition of what you do. It’s like β€œArtisan” in French vs β€œArtist”, considering I always blended illustration with embroidery is see my embroidery more as embroidery art than a craft, though when put on a utility object like a pillow or bag it becomes more craft. So maybe in this aspect it’s a utility function too - interesting !! Keep me posted on your developments πŸ₯°
