Hi there!
Oh dear…
Last week I sent out an oldie but goldie article with a virtual visit to Paris (the upcoming book will feature lots of Paris projects… of course!).
But about mid-week I realized that I had pasted the wrong link at the end, which sent everyone interested in learning more about the book “Travel The World Through The Eye Of A Needle” to the wrong place.
Oh no! Sorry!
Here is the correct link to learn about how to secure a physical copy of the upcoming art book (and the juicy extras that is coming through to all funders as well).
Why did I just share about my mistake openly?
Because this is the reality of being an artist. We don’t get it right every time (far from it). But it’s in trying and failing that we slowly advance towards the way we ought to go.
I’m incredibly grateful for you being here with me and I want it to feel like you’re part of the journey: both the ups and downs.
In all honesty, September has thrown me a curveball so far, thank GOD there is ART to keep me going!
How has your September been so far?
Though I’m not as far ahead on the art book script as I would’ve liked (still aiming to finish the script by end Oct), I have made a lot of “invisible” advancement. You know the type of shadow work that goes behind every single artwork, but which is invisible to the eye, like to think, re-think, and think some more.
There’s no art without the heart (and mind), and sometimes the two need some time to figure things out. In fact, the heart and mind will also pay the gut a visit to try and feel what feels best before continuing with a certain project.
For example:
I’ve carried the DIY mockup with me wherever I’ve been. Thanks to that hands on experience plus visits to multiple bookstores and libraries in the past weeks (such as the one below in Paris last week), I think I’ve decided to change the format to square… (still a small one though!).
Considering that the images are sourced from the archive on my Instagram account Petronella.Art, it makes sense from a neat layout perspective to stick with a square book for square images.
(I also envision a clean look… though potentially with a black background instead of white….)
A brief look:
One of the gorgeous bookshops in Paris
Ps. This bookshop will also feature in the book-funding celebration class “How to capture the essence of a place in an art piece”.
Below is a sketch and structural break down from the bookshop example - and DO NOT worry if drawing is not your strength. I will use drawing to demonstrate the examples and easier break up the process into more digestible bits.
My goal is to focus the class on showcasing many types of examples for it to be as hands on as possible and invite you to look around your surrounding with new eyes 💝
Class date will be released shortly, ALL book-funders will have automatic access to the class!
You can become a book funder by upgrading here in the magazine to the Book Funding tier, OR through my website via THIS LINK.
Continuation on the script…
I’ve also thought a great deal about the order of projects… my options are:
Chronological
Geographical
Grouped according to techniques
Grouped according to style
I’ve come to the conclusion that I think geographical order makes the most sense in relation to the narrative of “Travel The World….”
It would be really neat to draw a map and mark the locations on the opening pages…
What do you think?
Thank you so much for coming along! Hopefully the coming week will give space for more advancements on the script and class.
It’s fascinating how the early stages (the planning and conceptualisation) tends to take more space than the actual production… or is that just me?
I’m still aiming to have the book ready to print in end October so that copies will be available for shipping through November (and hopefully arrive in time for holidays! Fingers crossed 🤞🏼)

Yes a map is a great idea, maybe if the cost is not too much the map could be the inside papers of the cover. Just a thought..
Any book with a map in the opening pages is a good book, in my opinion! 💫
